Frankston Oval grandstand fire

Fire ripped through the historic Frankston Oval grandstand in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

CFA responded to the call at 2.30am and it took 60 firefighters and nine trucks an hour to bring the blaze under control. Two aerial appliances were also needed and fire investigators were on scene to determine the cause of the fire.

The grandstand, which is more than 100 years old, was completely destroyed. CFA Public Affairs photographer Keith Pakenham and Frankston Fire Brigade member Sean Ryan were on-scene to capture the firefight in action.

I was a Vol at Frankston 1969 to 1984 and a keen supporter of the Frankston VFA side. It was said then that when that grandstand goes there will be nothing we could do to save it. How right we were.
