Crash landing
A crash landing at Point Cook RAAF base has once again highlighted the versatility and professionalism of CFA volunteers.

Just after midday on Saturday (05/04/08), Point Cook and Werribee brigades were paged to attend the air base after a Mustang fighter plane reported problems with its landing gear.

The dramatic crash landing that followed gave volunteers the chance to put their aviation incident training into action.

P.S. Since this video was posted to the CFA TV channel on YouTube yesterday (10/04/08) it has been viewed almost 500 times making it Australia's 54th most viewed video (News & Politics category) in the past 24 hours.

It is also the 18th most viewed News & Politics video in Russia in the past 24 hours!

The US aviation website PointNiner says:

"This is by far the best step-by-step video of an aircraft accident that I've seen in a long time. After a landing gear failure at the RAAF Base Williams, Point Cook, Victoria, Australia, this WWII Mustang brings it in with the CFA firefighters ready to roll. Very well produced, with excellent footage and analysis."

The website author, Steve McCoy, also said: "As an individual who has been a part of numerous aviation incidents, I was thoroughly impressed with your crew."

Great video footage (well packaged) and a great chance to promote CFA to the world.

Excellent little video... Good work to the crews, both fire and production :)

The pilot was 70 years old (apparently a former commercial pilot with Ansett).

He was taking another 70-year-old on a birthday joy flight paid for by his family.

The aircraft owner joked that he would be charging double as he got to spend extra time in the air as they used up fuel.

The passenger said he'd been in worse car crashes!

This link was sent by my friend who was one of the fire-fighters. What a shame, hope the plane is salvageble? I will definately get other WWII plane enthusiasts to look at this clip.
