About 200 firefighters from DSE and CFA were involved in fighting a fire in the Bunyip State Park near Gembrook, which started on Anzac Day.
Rainfall over the weekend stopped the spread of the fire, which burned 550 hectares. The fire burned mainly public land, but entered private property on its south-eastern edge in Garfield North and came to within 800 metres of houses.
This week there may still be smoke rising from the burned area, and DSE firefighters will black out any smouldering material as they continue patrol the boundary.
The area had not burned since 1978, which meant fuels were heavy.
