Junior teams taking part in the State Rural Championships at Wodonga did more than compete in races.
They also had to find a yellow button, a bottle of Joop aftershave, licences with the names Lois or Harvey on them, and much more.
That’s because the junior teams could vie for prizes in the scavenger hunt and quiz, run each year at State Championships with juniors competing by the Youth Unit.
And pity parents or guardians of the prize-winners on the way home from the championships – first place was a giant sack of lollies for the winning brigade, while second-place getters had to make do with a slightly smaller bag.
This year’s winners were St Paul’s brigade from the New South Wales Rural Fire Service. CFA’s own Chiltern and Connewarre were equal second.
A prize is also given for competing on Sunday only, instead of the whole weekend. That was won by Wodonga West.
Youth Programs Manager Sherri McKerley said the quiz and scavenger hunt were designed to provide team-building and friendly competition, negotiating and bartering skills, mixing among generations and the opportunity to find out information about other CFA departments, teams and people.
And fill in time between races!
