by Glenn Bullen, Qualified Leading Firefighter, Region 8 Rope Rescue Coordinator
Who – Region 8 & 13 Rope Rescue Technicians (CFA Staff and Volunteers) and three members of VICSES (Staff and Volunteers).
What - Four day skills maintenance course for Region 8 & 13 Rope Rescue Technicians. The course participants were exposed to new procedures and equipment. This course, the only one of its type, was supported and run by Region 8.
When - Monday 17 to Thursday 20 March 2008
Where – The course was run at CFA’s South Eastern Training Ground, Carrum, with prac training off-sight at Wilson Botanic Gardens, Berwick and GPU GasNet, Dandenong.
Why – To retain Region 8's ability to service the risks within its own area, and to provide a capacity to offer support throughout the state to such technical incidents.
The course provided a fantastic opportunity for CFA and SES participants to share skills and experiences that will ultimately enhance the service delivery to the community.
Participants were challenged over the four days, practising a full range of technician-level rope rescue skills. These skills are required relatively frequently in an advisory, support or full response capacity.
Some recent responses in February include:
- support to Police Search and Rescue Mt Donna Buang Rd, Healesville for a Para glider stuck in a tree; and
- support to Eltham in Region 13 with crews and equipment for a Confined Space Rescue incident.
