Wallan Tanker accident - update on driver's condition

Last Thursday (24 April), the Wallan Tanker was involved in a collision with a semi-trailer on the Hume Highway, two kilometres south of the turnoff to Clonbinane (10 kms SE of Kilmore).

The driver of the truck, Wallan brigade Lieutenant Allan Kosmer, was seriously injured in the accident and airlifted to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.

Allan’s wife Linda today reported that Allan is responding better than expected to treatment. Allan has come out of an induced coma, and has periods of consciousness when he recognises his wife, has smiled at her and tried to get out of bed.

Allan suffered serious head injuries during the accident but has no other major fractures or injury damage. His condition is listed as stable and he has moved out of the Intensive Care Unit at the Alfred.

Linda and the family would like to thank CFA members for the wonderful support they have provided since the accident.

We will continue to update you on Allan’s condition as we are able.

Update (10:45am 1/05/08): Allan is being transferred from hospital to a rehabilitation centre today.

Thanks for the update about our injured colleague. This is a much better approach than the original article that was in the worst traditions of voyueristic, tabloid journalism, with 3 picures of the damaged tanker and no mention of the condition of the driver. I hope Fire Flyer gets it's act together and conveys news in a balanced, informative manner without resorting to the type of journalism that is offensive to the staff and volunteers of the CFA. I hope whoever was responsible for the original article has been suitably reprimanded.

CFA members across Victoria will be relieved to hear this news! Best wishes to Allan and his family.

Is it possible to repost the photos of the accident that were included in the original post?

As a driver I thought it was very informative to see how the truck held up in such a serious collision.

Thank you all for your comments. Concerning publication of the photographs of the truck in the first article, we published the information we had at the time, which included the photographs, and have attempted to keep you updated on Allan's condition. Readers, as illustrated by the comments above, have different views about the use of the images. Cheers, Fire Flyer.
