Crews from Corio, Lara and Geelong responded to a chemical spill at Terminals Pty Ltd, Corio.

Shortly after 1.00pm on Thursday 18 December, 2000 litres of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) leaked whilst being unloaded from a ship berthed at the Terminals Pty Ltd facility in Corio. The leak was noticed by an employee at the site and the unloading process was stopped.

The emergency procedures at the facility were quickly followed - fire retardant foam was applied to the area and local CFA brigades were called to the incident.

Crews from Corio, Lara and Geelong City were quickly on-scene and firefighters wearing chemical splash suits inspected the area to ensure it was adequately covered with foam and that none of the chemical had escaped the area.

Gas detection readers were utilised to check the local area before the spill was drained into an underground storage tank to be removed at a later time. EPA and Workcover were notified and the cause of the leak is being investigated.
