The Brumby Government tabled its response to the report of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee (ENRC) into the Impact of Public Land Management Practices on Bushfires in Victoria in State Parliament in early December. The Victorian Government response “supported” or “supported-in-principle” all of the Inquiry’s 20 recommendations.
A focus of the inquiry was the adequacy of the planned burning program. The government’s response acknowledged prescribed burning is a powerful tool in managing the state’s vulnerability to large fire events and supported the need to work with the community to develop and implement large scale, planned burning.
The government response also “supported” or “supported-in-principle” other key recommendations relating to Integrated Fire Management Planning, rehabilitation of fire control lines, fencing policy, replenishment of essential water used for firefighting, and continuous improvement in community information and education.
The ENRC Inquiry commenced in March 2007 and involved extensive consultation with regional communities as well as on-ground visits including East Gippsland, north east Victoria and the Grampians. DSE and CFA provided several submissions to ENRC, presented as witnesses and hosted representatives on field visits across the state. Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria also participated in the Inquiry.
