Premier announces $5 million CFA centre at Ballarat

Victorian Premier John Brumby has announced a new $5 million, state-of-the-art firefighting emergency response centre to be built in Ballarat.

In Ballarat to mark the start of the construction last Friday 14 November, the Premier said that the new CFA Emergency Management Facility was part of the State Government’s major capital works program to drive new jobs and stimulate economic activity across Victoria.

“Our government is taking action to ensure Victorian communities are well-equipped to meet the challenges ahead, and this new state-of-the-art emergency response centre will provide the best possible firefighting services for the future.

“This will be a high-quality service responsible for coordinating 215 fire brigades and 11,000 volunteers, initially housing about 50 staff involved in volunteer support, fire operations, training, community safety and administration, with room to grow to 70.”

The new CFA Emergency Management Facility will unite three existing Ballarat emergency services hubs - the Regional Emergency Coordination Centre, the Midlands Wimmera Area office and the Ballarat Regional Headquarters at Learmonth Road in Wendouree.

Mr Brumby planted a commemorative tree to mark the beginning of the multi-million dollar project, saying the facility had excellent access to the new Wendouree railway station under construction, the Western Highway and Wendouree community facilities.

The CFA Emergency Management Facility is scheduled for completion in mid-2009.
