One of Melbourne’s best known sport broadcasters and part-time CFA Media Officer, Ian Major, passed away last week at Cabrini Hospital following a long illness.
Ian worked for CFA Public Affairs and the State Emergency Coordination Centre (SECC) over a number of fire seasons as both a Media Liaison Officer and writer for Brigade magazine.
He started his radio career as a general announcer at 3CS Colac, and then moved to 3XY where he began his football commentary with ex-VFL umpire Harry Beitzel. Ian then went to radio 3KZ where he spent more than twenty years behind the microphone and in management roles. He is perhaps best known for his work with former Richmond champion, Jack Dyer as the football commentary team “The Captain and The Major”. The duo was consistently the number one rated football commentary team for many years on Melbourne radio. However, Ian’s career was far wider than football. He covered several Olympics for Australian radio including the Munich games at which he filed some of the first reports of the terrorist attack in the Olympic village. Ian played football for Braybrook Football Club and was a devoted “Bulldogs” man.
CFA extends its condolences to his wife Pam and children, Darren, Scott and Kelly.
