The Hon Alan Griffin MP Minister for Veterans' Affairs Federal Member for Bruce 18 March 2008 Dear Sir/Madam Anzac Day is Australia's most significant day of national commemoration. April 25 is the day we pause to remember and honour the service and sacrifice of Australia's servicemen and women in wars, conflicts and peace operations. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the Australian attack at Villers-Bretonneux. On the night of 24 April 1918, men of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) attacked German forces that had captured the French town of Villers-Bretonneux earlier that day. The action was successful but the fighting was fierce, and many lives were lost on both sides. For this reason the image for the 2008 Anzac Day poster is of men from the 46th Battalion. AIF, near Villers-Bretonneux, in 1918. Copies of the poster are included for your use. Further information about Anzac Day is available from the Commemorations Officer in your State/Territory on 133 254, by e-mail at commemorations@dva.gov.au or by visiting the www.dva.gov.au website.
