Firefighters' basketball success!

by Jason Lawrence, Operations Officer - CFA Region 13

The 'Ringburners' basketball team recently celebrated a triumphant Grand Final win in a local competition.

Ringburners is a team comprising predominately career staff from across several CFA Regions and has been competing in local competitions for about ten years.

Last season, we moved to the Knox competition held at Boronia Basketball Stadium. In our first season there, we performed very well throughout the regular season and progressed to the Semi Final.

In a tightly contested game, the Ringburners prevailed. On to the Grand Final… We were up against a team that had beaten us in our previous encounter, so it was always going to be a tight contest. And so it proved!

At the final siren, the scores were tied at 38 apiece. After a short recess, five minutes of extra time were played. The Ringburners ran away with the game in extra time, winning by more than 10 points.
With the challenge of running a team almost completely comprised of shift workers, the reward of a Grand Final win was a great effort!

Many thanks to team members playing in the finals and those who contributed throughout the season:

  • QF Aaron Jackson (Dandenong FS)
  • LFF Ricky Read (Hallam FS)
  • FO Shaun McRoberts (Dandenong FS)
  • FO Don Tomkins (Dandenong FS)
  • QF Dean Blyth (Eltham FS)
  • Josh McCarthy
  • QF Adam Small (Dandenong FS)
  • FF Luke Patterson (Traralgon FS)
  • OO Craig Brownlie (Springvale OIC)

Thanks also to all the supporters and scorers (mainly partners and family!!!).
The reigning premiers enjoyed a few “quiet celebratory drinks” at a local watering hole after the game…..

Well done boys!!!
