Cancer Council Victoria - Relay For Life and Clip Chappy!

CCV logo

The Cancer Council Victoria is once again supporting the team fundraising event Relay for Life. The overnight challenge is to have a team compete a 24 hour relay. The aim is carry a team’s baton continuously around an athletics track for 24 hours.

Relay for Life will be held from November 15 to 16 2008 at the Bill Stewart Athletics Track (Melways 62 C8) which is located directly behind CFA Headquarters in Burwood East.

You do not have to be an elite athlete to participate becasue the relay can be done either running or walking!

For some extra motivation, this particular Relay for Life event plays host to the Emergency Services Trophy. This is an award for the most laps completed, and is hotly contested between Emergency Services Organisations such as the Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board, Metropolitan Ambulance Service, the Victorian Police and, of course, CFA.

Last year, the event comprised 31 teams and raised $72,806.95. Our CFA team achieved the highest fundraising team total, raising $11,083.15.

CFA has developed a partnership with the Cancer Council of Victoria to deliver cancer awareness across CFA. So get involved and stay healthy at the same time. We are aiming to raise $15,000 towards the Cancer Council of Victoria. This way we can contribute to ‘Leading the fight against cancer’.

For more information you can visit the Relay For Life website.

To register your interest, e-mail Hallam Fire Station Leading Firefighter James Wong at j.wong@cfa.vic.gov.au, or Steve Brodie at s.brodie@cfa.vic.gov.au.

There are also other CFA related fundraising events currently taking place for the Cancer Council.

Clip Chappy is a fundraising event that will see Fire Officer Greg Chapman, of Hallam Fire Brigade, clip his face and head for the cause. Those of you that know Chappy, or have seen him recently, will understand that he is quite attached to his head of hair.

The event depends on your donations, and Chappy has negotiated the following conditions to protect his hair:

  • for a minimum donation of $1,000, Chappy will clip his hair.
  • if a $2,500 donation can be raised Chappy will allow his Mo' to be clipped as well.
  • if a $5,000 donation can be raised Chappy will let his head, Mo' and eyebrows be clipped!
A nominated person can do the clipping and the money can be raised by an individual or a group. However, these tasks will only be carried out if the fundraising targets mentioned are reached.

If you would like to see Chappy get clipped, then offer your donations now. The
Clip Chappy offer will expire at the end of September.

Contact James Wong at Hallam Fire Station at on 8795 7513 or email at j.wong@cfa.vic.gov.au for more details!
