Two CFA firefighters have been presented with the CFA Valor Medal in honour of their bravery in a rescue operation last year.
Leading Firefighters Adam Shearer and Mathew Kneebone played a key role in efforts to rescue a man trapped in a large, partially-filled canola grain silo in December 2007.
Adam and Mathew, who are both qualified in rope rescue and confined space rescue, entered the silo after initial attempts to rescue the man had failed. They performed expired air resuscitation in an effort to save his life; however, the man was tragically engulfed by the unstable grain and passed away.
“The bravery of these two firefighters and their selfless actions to help save the life of the trapped man went above and beyond. They are to be thanked for their courageous work during very stressful conditions.” said CFA Chief Officer Russell Rees.
The Valor Medal is a rarely-awarded accolade. According to Russell, only 15 Valor Medals have been awarded in CFA’s entire history, with these being the first since 2000.
The Valor Medals were presented to the two firefighters at the recent CFA Training College graduation ceremony in Fiskville.

Congratulations on a job well done guys.
To the Editor - since when did CFA award American medals? Valor = Valour :)
Hi there, thanks for pointing that out.
While we generally agree that it should be spelled 'Valour', for consistency's sake we stuck to 'Valor', as that is what it says on the actual medal itself.
