Wimmera brigades get community meeting centres

The Victorian government will provide $200,000 funding for the construction of community meeting centres at two CFA fire stations in the West Wimmera.

The meeting centres will be built at the Dinyarrak and South Lillimur fire stations. There are currently no facilities for general purpose meetings in both towns.

The grants were made available following a joint submission by CFA’s Midlands Wimmera Area HQ and the Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD). The new buildings will be attached to existing CFA Fire Stations as multipurpose centres for community activities. The intent is to build on the social cohesion provided through CFA brigades to enhance community sustainability.

The combination of the ongoing drought and impact of poor stock returns, coupled with declining populations, has seen many communities in the Wimmera and Mallee struggling to survive.
