Early in the morning on Sunday 7 December, CFA and the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) combined forces in a joint exercise on Mt Dandenong to test their readiness for the upcoming fire season.
Areas among the tall, timbered gums were marked out with various scenarios for oncoming brigades to respond to. Numerous locations in gullies and steep inclines were included to test the brigades’ ability to handle fast-moving bush and scrub fires.
Brigades were paged from their home locations and given updates along the way, simulating real-life fire calls. Several units were called to “go on” to other fire calls, as had happened in the 1997 fires in the area.
The exercise was also used to test the newly-arrived Dandenong Ranges Fire Brigades Group Mobile Communications Van, which had all radio traffic channelled through it.
James Noonan from DSE coordinated the event, with his crews in Parks Victoria vehicles and Slip-ons working together with CFA crews. The day ended with a briefing and group photo session at the One Tree Hill Reserve on Mt Dandenong.
