Knox Fire Brigades Group conducts a volunteer fire brigade torchlight parade every two years within the City of Knox. The next torchlight will be held on Saturday 28 February 2009.
Next year's parade will be a particularly special occasion because 2009 marks the 40th anniversary of the City of Knox. With a population of more than 150,000 residents, the City of Knox is protected by CFA's seven volunteer brigades and one integrated brigade in the area. Individual volunteer brigades in Knox have turnout statistics of 300 to 600 calls per year.
The torchlight parade in Victoria is based on tradition. Volunteer firefighters in uniform or turnout gear and carrying lighted open wicked lamps will march from Ferntree Gully Fire Station to the Ferntree Gully football ground at dusk. A number of marching bands will be interspersed within the parade, including the band from the NSW Rural Fire Service.
The 2009 parade will also be an important part of the Knox Festival. Traditionally, large crowds gather along the parade route and at the oval to greet the firefighters. Shortly after arrival at the football ground, there will be a spectacular fireworks display.
Around 25 CFA volunteer brigades, comprising over 250 volunteer firefighters are expected to be involved, together with four bands.
