A grass and scrub fire burnt through an area of natural ti-tree and scrub in Carrum Downs in an area known as the Ballarto Rd Triangle at the rear of an Aldi Supermarket store yesterday.
On the eastern flank of the fire were homes in an estate called Botany Park. CFA crews worked with the assistance of a Type 2 Helitack 331. A wind change caused a flare-up. One house suffered fire damage but the fire was contained to its roof.
Bayside Council Rangers also assisted with two slip-on units in the firefight and later in the call members from the Wildlife Rescue coordinated the removal of many fire-affected possums in the burnt area.
The fire was contained to five hectares.

Some Great footage, Thanks.
I CAN NOT uderstand why, following the footage of a truck role over and the Chief,s meessage on the Pre Season DVD, we STILL HAVE fire fighters standing up on the tray while the Tanker is moving from place to place. (No hoses in the hands evident) Perhaps it will be their truck that rolls the next time.
We need to be careful about passing judgements on people based on short video clips or photos. Video clips and photos don't provide the whole context of any situation.
The crew in question were actively involved in operational activity (they were on the fireline, houses were under ember attack, they were carrying out observational duties, and they were preparing to attack the fire). I believe using a dynamic risk assessment their behaviour did not breach SOPs.
Of course, it's always good to reinforce the seatbelt message so thankyou for that.
