A fire began on the beach side of the Mornington Peninsula Freeway in McCrae early yesterday afternoon. Fire Officer Neil Schlipalius from Rosebud brigade was the Incident Controller, and coordinated the tankers and crews along the freeway.

Police blocked the freeway between Jetty Road and Arthurs Seat Road, where the fire had jumped to the centre median strip and then over to the northern embankment. Houses in Bayview Road came under threat as the fire raced up the edge of the embankment. Several pupmers and tankers provided asset protection to houses that were under ember attack as the flames reached some 15 metres in height.

A power pole cross-arm burnt through and was in danger of falling down onto lower voltage supply lines while crews were working nearby. Fences, trees and gardens of some houses were damaged as firefighters and residents put out small spot grass fires in front and rear yards. One pumper sustained minor heat damage as the fire flared over the area. Several crews stayed through the night to monitor the fire ground in case of a flare-up. The inbound lanes of the freeway were re-opened around 7.00pm last night.
