Point Cook CFA firefighter Adrian Doe is readying himself for the trip of a lifetime—a 1,555 kilometre bike ride from Brisbane to Cairns in aid of cancer research.
Adrian will make the trip as part of the Tour de Cure, a 10-day charity cycle event that will straddle Queensland’s spectacular coast, taking in towns and cities such as Noosa, Gladstone, Bundaberg, Mackay, Townsville and Mission Beach. The Tour is scheduled from 29 May to 7 June.
“The Tour is a huge challenge but I’m looking forward to it and am preparing as best as I can. I’m training hard, cycling about 500 kilometres per week and am in reasonable shape,” said Adrian.
At 25 years old, Adrian a former junior footballer with Kilsyth and fitness fanatic, said his interest in the Tour was sparked by his volunteer work with Camp Quality, a non-profit, volunteer organisation that supports children with cancer.
“Camp Quality is one of five organisations directly benefiting from the Tour de Cure. It’s an organisation I’m proud to support, having been involved and working with the kids for the past few years. This tour is my opportunity to help raise funds for Camp Quality and the other cancer organisations—Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, National Breast Cancer Foundation, the Australian Cancer Council and the Leukaemia Foundation.”
Adrian said aside from the ride itself, an even bigger challenge was fundraising, with each of the 55 riders in this year’s Tour committing to raise at least $10,000. The overall target this year is $600,000.
“It’s a challenge, that’s for sure. I haven’t really done this sort of thing before and am doing what I can to raise the $10,000. As a CFA firefighter, I know how generous people have been in supporting the survivors of the bushfires and am hoping that people can extend that generosity to this very important cause.
“Any sort of donation is welcome. There are even opportunities for businesses to sign on as jersey sponsors. This will give them brand visibility for the tour’s duration, which is expected to receive prominent coverage.”
Donations can be made any time via the Tour website.
Businesses wanting to sign-on as sponsors can contact Adrian directly on 0421 965 177.
Good luck Adrian!
