Message from the Yarra Area/Region 13 General Manager

Lex de Man

Victoria as a whole and the Yarra Area/Region 13, where many of the recent fires occurred, has been changed forever. The landscape and many of the houses and community buildings in the towns in this region have been destroyed and life for many of us will never be the same again.

There has been a lot written and spoken about how devastating this loss has been and rightly so. There is a change now and it is coming through more and more as I meet people. They are starting to rebuild their lives and homes as they put plans and physical structures in place to bring back a sense of normality.

The landscape itself is coming back to life with new growth appearing daily and cooler temperatures providing the opportunity for everyone to take a breath, reflect on what has happened and then move on.

I am proud of the work the CFA team, volunteers and staff, is undertaking in the Yarra Area/Region 13 in rebuilding our lives and the community. There have been many positive stories in the community and some in the media about people’s determination and optimistic attitude to get on with their lives in the best way they can. There was an article written in The Age this week that expressed these sentiments very well.

Some examples of what is happening locally include the re-establishment of the Kinglake Primary School, with the students resuming regular school attendance.

The ABC has set up a local radio station operating from a neighbourhood centre with a large aerial attached to a cherry picker outside the building. This service has provided an opportunity for locals to stay in touch and to keep up with any local meetings or events.

There are also crosses to ABC 774 programs like The Conversation Hour with Jon Faine, as well as reports from local residents on issues of interest. One particularly impressive segment included the local school children hosting a one hour show and conducting talk back with other students and community members.

Thank you to everyone from the region for your hard work and dedication, and to all those supporting us through this period. Keep up the good work.
