RACV has given the Midlands Wimmera Area a $5000 grant as part of the 2008 Community Help Grants program.
The grant has funded the creation of a smoke alarm mascot costume.
CFA Midlands Wimmera Area Brigade Administrative Support Officer (BASO) Sherene Mounier says the costume is a hit with the public.
“It was great to see the looks on people’s faces at the field days when they first saw the smoke alarm mascot coming towards them,” Sherene said.
“The costume is such an easy way to initiate conversations with members of the public about the need to test and maintain their smoke alarms.”
With the assistance of staff from Animal & Odd Bodd Creators and CFA Community Safety and Public Affairs staff, the newly developed CFA corporate smoke alarm character has a new uniform!
The front of the costume features a green test button for a nose which is a visual reminder that people need to test their smoke alarms and the text “working smoke alarms save lives”.
The rear of the costume advertises the CFA website and the text “change your clock change your smoke alarm battery” as a reminder of CFA’s corporate campaign. Printed also on the rear of the costume is the RACV website and the text “proudly supported by RACV”.
Launched at the Wimmera Machinery Field Days in Horsham and the Ballarat Begonia festival parade early this month, the mascot visually enhances the Community Safety department’s continual public education initiatives. This stresses the importance of working smoke alarms and regular battery changing/maintenance.
The smoke alarm mascot costume will be used at community education displays, festivals and fetes, field days, safety days, agricultural shows and fire safety and awareness sessions delivered in the community.
“It is fantastic that RACV, through their community grants program, were able to support the CFA Midlands Wimmera Area for this community safety initiative and we are very grateful for the donation,” Sherene said.
Victoria’s fire services urge all Victorians to be alarmed and Change Your Clock, Change Your Smoke Alarm Battery on Sunday 5th April.
