State Urban Fire Brigades Championships

Victorian Premier John Brumby

Victorian Premier John Brumby officially opened the Urban Fire Brigades Championships in Warrnambool over the Labour day weekend.

Around 700 firefighters visited Warrnambool and along with teams from Victoria, representatives from Western Australia and New South Wales comprised the 76 teams taking part.

Warrnambool, hosting the championships for the first time since 1990, was flooded with support. An estimated 2000 people lined the streets to welcome the firefighters for the three-day event.

The LaTrobe Valley firefighter's team won the championship's grand aggregate, 16 points ahead of runner-up Dandenong.

Maryvale coach Shane Flowers was crowned the competition's champion fireman.

Listen to Warrnambool team coach Alan 'Rubber' Woodhams give his assessment of the importance of the championships.
