The emergency services pancake tossing relay was held last month at Federation Square to kick off UnitingCare’s national fundraiser, Pancake Day.
The CFA team tossed pancakes in a frying pan while racing against teams from other emergency services.
The other emergency services participating included Metropolitan Ambulance Service, Victoria Police, Metropolitan Fire Brigade, State Emergency Service and the Department of Sustainability and Environment. The field of competitors grew this year with 2 Catering teams joining the emergency services to compete for the prize.
CFA was represented by a team from HQ consisting of Kay Hawkins, Alison Breed, David Garnock, Joanne Richards, Ingrid Farrugia and Kristy Platten.
The Minister for Police and Emergency Services Bob Cameron helped launch the event by judging the race. He shook contestants’ hands before the race and presented the Golden Frying Pan to the winners on the day - Chefs on the Run.
“Through its agencies, UnitingCare does a fantastic job helping Australians experiencing poverty or disadvantage, from finding a homeless person a bed for the night to caring for a frail older person,” he said.
“Our emergency services already do a fantastic job helping to keep Victorians safe and I applaud them for giving up their valuable time to further assist those in need.”
Lucy Cutts, the Uniting Care Pancake Day 2009 Events Coordinator, has since applauded CFA involvement.
"CFA were an essential team in our event in the Melbourne City Square," she said.
"The pancake-tossing relay was one of the highlights of the day and it was brilliant to have all of the Victorian Emergency Services represented."
And while the 'Golden Skillet' has eluded us yet again, CFA will be back again to take part next year.
