CFA works with Cancer Council Victoria

CFA, volunteer associations and the United Firefighters Union (UFU) are working with the Cancer Council Victoria (CCV) in a new cancer awareness program aimed at improving CFA members’ understanding of cancer and how to reduce their risks.

A work agreement has been signed to deliver a training program to CFA’s health and wellbeing facilitators who will, in turn, deliver the information about prostate, bowel, breast and cervical cancer to volunteers and staff.

CCV suggests that understanding and identifying the early signs of cancer can significantly assist in effectively managing this disease.

“Cancer affects our entire community and CFA is no exception,” CFA Chairman Kerry Murphy says.

“With 60,000 members spread across Victoria from a variety of backgrounds and age groups, this disease can impact on any member or their family.

“This program will further help CFA members build their awareness about cancer, identify the risk factors and early signs of cancer and understand how they can reduce their risks.”

CCV will provide a range of products including a CCV calendar of events and the
Cutting Your Risk of Cancer brochure. Specific regional seminars will also be held and information packs developed and provided to all brigades.

“This program reflects the value and importance that all of us – volunteers, staff, unions and associations - place on the wellbeing of CFA members,” Mr Murphy says. “Being and staying healthy is just as important as being safe when it comes to your overall wellbeing. And being aware and knowing what steps to take is the message we share with you through this new program.”

Information about the program and regular updates will be provided to members through
The Fireman, Brigade magazine, and CFA Online (members only).
