CFA brigades across Victoria received a boost this week after long-time supporters IGA donated more than $296,000 to CFA. The money was raised through IGA’s Community Chest program and will be donated directly back to brigades in the communities they support.
A cheque was handed to CFA Chief Executive Officer, Neil Bibby, at CFA headquarters in Burwood East by IGA State Board representative and Mt Evelyn SUPA IGA store owner, Gemmell Ingpen (pictured right).
Mr Bibby said: “IGA has supported CFA brigades for many years now. Through busy summers, flooded winters and everything in between IGA continues to show its enduring support for CFA.
“The community link between each IGA store and CFA brigade is recognised across Victoria and it is something we are very proud of. Each donation will be used to help support those communities and continue to build this strong and ongoing partnership.”
Each IGA store raises funds through the sale of IGA branded products and in-store specials during the year. In addition to these funds, IGA continues to help promote fire safety messages. Earlier this year, IGA supported CFA volunteers through a special thank-you event.
Mr Ingpen said: “Many of IGA’s stores across Victoria are in areas supported by CFA brigades. It is important for each store to link with its local community and what better way than by improving the community’s own fire safety.
“Again our stores have done a great job by raising these funds and the past year alone has shown us the excellent work CFA does all year round.”
Captain Koala and firefighters and a truck from Scoresby Fire Brigade also attended the cheque handover.

Maybe you can tell us how that money is utilised within CFA
Hi there
We'll see what we can find out and get back to you! Cheers. Fire Flyer.
Is it possible to get a breakdown of donation amounts to individual Brigades?
Hi Anonymous x 2
More than 170 IGA stores donate to over 240 CFA brigades so we won't list them all here! Every IGA store in CFA’s area nominates one or more CFA brigades to benefit from funds raised through IGA's Community Chest program. Many stores donate to more than one brigade to help spread their support.
Across Victoria these funds are raised through the sale of IGA branded products and specially marked products – the collective total is close to $300,000. This entire amount goes straight back to each nominated brigade and is used in the area where it is raised.
It is then up to the brigade, in conjunction with its area, to spend the funds as it needs to. Many brigades use the funds to purchase additional equipment or put it towards an item used by their group. These might include new torches, new hose connectors, a new FWD or a new fax machine.
Each nominated brigade will receive confirmation in the coming weeks and you can contact your treasurer for details about whether your brigade benefited.
Cheers, Fire Flyer.
