CFA and human rights

Think charterAs a community based, emergency service organisation, CFA is no stranger to the concept of human rights. CFA members across the State selflessly give of their own time and skills to protect life and property, upholding and respecting the rights and dignity of all Victorians.

In this context, CFA welcomes the introduction of The Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities (Victorian Charter). The Victorian Charter puts into law many of the values and attitudes already enshrined within CFA’s own values and everyday member conduct.

With a focus on freedom, respect, equality and dignity, the Victorian Charter echoes CFA members’ commitment to providing their services in mutual, respectful and active partnerships. Its primary aim is to encourage and promote respect for human rights across the Victorian community.

The obligation on CFA to comply with the Victorian Charter began on 1 January 2008. Every staff member and brigade secretary has received information about the Victorian Charter. Further details can also be found at the Department of Justice website: http://www.justice.vic.gov.au/humanrights/.

CFA members are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the Victorian Charter to ensure CFA can support this legislation, which aims to advance human rights across and within our communities.
