CFA 2008-2009 Environment Grants

CFA Environment logo - We save lives, we save homes, now let's help save the futureApplications close 5 pm Friday 21 December 2008!

Does your brigade want to reduce its contribution to climate change and help others learn about reducing their impact on the environment?

This year we are looking for projects that will help to slow down climate change and its impacts.

Small grants of up to $1000 are being of
fered to help support environmental improvement projects by CFA brigades. Brigades can apply individually or as a group.

Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is a national and international priority. In Victoria, our climate is becoming warmer and in most areas, drier. These changes are expected to have a significant impact on water availability and wildfire frequency, as well as agriculture, sea levels, biodiversity and human health.

CSIRO predicts that the number of days with high or extreme forest fire danger will increase by up to 70% by 2050!

If you are looking for ideas on what your brigade can do to save energy and slow down climate change, check out the case studies shown below. Or, look at this year's grants guidelines.

Copies have also been emailed to Areas (Operations Managers and Managers Community Safety).

PROJECT IDEAS

Here are some of the environmental initiatives that brigades have been undertaking with the help of this funding
program.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Solar powered fire station
PROJECT: Solar power to satellite station

YEAR : 2004/2005

BRIGADE: Bonang Fire Brigade

Bonang brigade installed solar power at its Satellite Station at Delegate River. The station previously had no power. Now the Delegate River Brigade members have internal lighting and power and are able to recharge the truck's battery all using solar power.

Pedal power
PROJECT: Bicycle facility

YEAR : 2007/2008
BRIGADE : Riddells Creek Fire Brigade

The brigade applied to installed a secure
bicycle facility at the fire station to support members attending the station for meetings and call-outs on their bikes rather than in their cars.

Solar powered floodlights
PROJECT : Solar powered floodlights
YEAR : 2007/2008

BRIGADE : Dereel Fire Brigade

Dereel brigade installed two solar powered floodlights to light exterior of station and car park area. Apart from providing much needed security, the use of solar power reduces the brigade's energy consumption.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Energy efficient lighting
PROJECT: Replace station's fluorescent tubes
YEAR : 2007/2008
BRIGADE : Frankston Fire Brigade

Frankston used its grant to replace the station's 62 fluorescent light tubes with a more energy efficient lighter/brighter blue tube. Only one tube is needed whereas the fluorescent tubes needed 2 tubes. The brigade also bought motion sensors that automatically switch off lights when the room is not in use, saving energy.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recharging
PROJECT: 60W solar panel
YEAR : 2007/2008
BRIGADE : Research Fire Brigade

The brigade purchased a 60w Solar Panel to be used to charge rechargeable batteries.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Health and environment
PROJECT: Skylight and climate contr
ol system
YEAR : 2005/2006
BRIGADE : Clonbinane Fire Brigade

This project has provided natural light for a windowless meeting room that is used by the brigade and the wider community, reducing the need to use fluorescent lights during the day and sa
ving energy.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Managing waste
PROJECT: Colac waste project
YEAR : 2004/2005 to 2007/2008
BRIGADE : Beeac-Corangamite Group

This group has built a centralised drop-off point for local brigades to dispose of waste and recyclables that are not able to be disposed of via Council collections. The group has built a fenced compound with a concrete floor and signage. They have been assisted by grants over a four years.

Learning about grasslands
PROJECT: Grassland information board
YEAR : 2006/2007
BRIGADE : Shelford Rural Fire Brigade

The brigade has installed an information board outside the fire station in conjunction with DSE to raise awareness of the flora and fauna of the local native grasslands and the fire management and other work being done to keep the grasslands in good condition.
