Firefighters were called upon to battle a large blaze on a rural property near Royal Parade in Riddells Creek on 27 October 2008. Volunteer and career firefighters from Riddells Creek, Gisborne, Sunbury and Bolinda-Monegeeta formed a team of up to 30 firefighters who battled the fire, which began shortly after 2.30pm.

The blaze appears to have been the result of a private burn off becoming too large for the owner to handle. The fire scorched through up to five acres of gorse bushes before getting alarmingly close to the nearby forest at the back of Riddells Creek.

The dry conditions combined with warmer weather and strong winds have caught a number of residents by surprise during the past week. The Riddells Creek Fire Brigade urge all residents to take the necessary precautions when burning off during the coming weeks.
